I've never been a smoker, but I can understand the slightly decadent appeal offered by this 1938 ad: It's great fun... going to bed with a mystery story... smoking cigarette after cigarette, while the plot thickens. Cleveland Plain Dealer - May 1, 1938 Turns out that the model in the ad, Sarah DeSantis, really did chain-smoke Old Gold cigarettes: "That was in 1938 and the people who made Old Golds had a contest looking for someone who'd be right for this new ad campaign they were running. So I sent them my picture and told them I smoked two packs of their cigarettes a day — and in a flash, they decided I was their new golden girl."
