Miss Vertebral Pulchritude
Paul recently posted about the International Posture Queen of 1957 and linked to an earlier post of mine about "Perfect Posture Girl." Digging deeper into our "back" catalog, I also find the Perfect Back Contest and America's Most Beautiful Back Contest. Here's one more addition to this growing list of posture beauty queens: Miss Vertebral Pulchritude. Chiropractors first got the idea of drawing attention to the "vertebral pulchritude" of an actress in 1956 when they awarded Jayne Mansfield a "scroll and citation" for hers. In 1958, they progressed to awarding Greta Thyssen the title of "Miss Vertebral Pulchritude," followed by Julie Newmar in 1959. After this, I can't find any more references to vertebral pulchritude.
