Sleep in Comfort between Alice and Louise
News reports from the 1940s claimed that in the small town of Comfort, Texas one could find a sign outside an auto camp that read, "Sleep in Comfort, between Alice and Louise." The joke was that Alice and Louise were the towns on either side of Comfort. Cincinnati Enquirer - Aug 29, 1943 It was just a joke, but while the town of Comfort definitely exists, I can't find any evidence that it was ever flanked by Alice and Louise. There are places in Texas named Alice and Louise, but Comfort isn't anywhere close to them. Nor is it even between them. This seems to be why some modern retellings of the joke have changed the towns to "Alice and Loraine," because Comfort is midway between those two, even though it's about 3 hours from each.
