Money pumped down oil wells
1972: Some oil drillers began pumping ground-up old money down wells, using it as "drilling mud." At the time, most old currency was burned, but nowadays I think most of it is recycled in various ways. Maybe some of it is still used as drilling mud. Some other uses: Horse breeders tried to use it as bedding but the chemicals in the old money caused skin rashes on the horses. Shredded cash now ends up as mulch, compost, potting soil, fuel pellets, and even insulation for homeowners. El Paso Herald-Post - June 16, 1972
