The Pregnancy Puff
From 1972: pretending to be pregnant as a fashion choice. The pregnancy puff is an egg-shaped satin pillow fringed with antique lace and garnished with rosettes, designed to be worn under a body suit or a dress or whatever. It makes you look about seven months pregnant. Why pretend to be pregnant? According to the designers... It makes the women who wear the thing "feel very soft, feminine and romantic, gives them inner peace." Men jump and give pregnancy-puffed women seats on buses or subways. [And at parties] It's a way to use male chauvinism against itself. Men bring you canapes, drinks, light your cigarettes, open doors for you. Different times. Looking pregnant would no longer be a way to get drinks and cigarettes at parties. I'm guessing they didn't sell many of these things.
