The Rudy Vallee Breach of Promise Suit

September 1934: Typist Frances Singer sued Rudy Vallee for $250,000, alleging that he had breached his promise to marry her. Singer explained that Vallee had proposed to her via his songs broadcast on the radio in which he "was singing to her and her alone, and by a sort of musical code system assuring her of his undying love and matrimonial intentions." And yet, he had failed to marry her. Vallee countered that he had "never even heard" of Singer. Her suit was eventually dismissed due to her failure to post a $250 bond as security for the court costs. NY Daily News - Sep 5, 1934 Washington Times Herald - Sep 6, 1934
