Wanted to ride rocket
May 10, 1946: The U.S. army launched a remade German V-2 rocket to a height of 75 miles. It was the first of 25 captured V-2 rockets that the army tested. Mark Ridge, a former stunt flier, had volunteered to ride in the rocket, but the army turned him down. Their experts noted that even though there was room for a human being in the rocket, "there was no known means of escaping alive before the rocket crashed to earth."
