Carbon Emissions of Aortic Valve Replacements
Recently published in the European Heart Journal (July 2, 2025): "Carbon emission analysis of aortic valve replacement: the environmental footprint of transcatheter vs. surgical procedures." The authors compared two methods of aortic valve replacement, open surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) versus transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), in order to determine which had the smallest carbon footprint. The prize went to TAVR which had about half the footprint of SAVR. An interesting piece of info to know, I suppose, but are aortic valve replacements actually a significant contributor to global warming?
