The Death of William the Goose
William the Goose lived on the campus of Northern Illinois University and was loved by almost all the students, but evidently not by all of them. In April 1981, one of them killed William, offering a bizarre excuse for the crime: The student said he was meditating near the east campus lagoon when the goose startled him. As a reflex action, the student said he hit William on the head with a large stick, killing him instantly. A memorial plaque was erected for William. It read, "William Goose NIU’s Honorary Student."
